Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has teased a VR headset that is currently in the prototyping stages at Facebook Reality Labs. the headset is probably not Oculus Quest 2 The successor we’ve all been waiting for, but according to Zuckerberg, will feature enhanced ‘retina resolution’.
Facebook CEO posted an image Wearing the prototype headset, explaining that he “spent the day with the Facebook Reality Labs research team in Redmond to demonstrate our next generation of virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence technology. This is an early retina resolution prototype.”
‘Retina resolution’ refers to the point at which the device’s resolution is indistinguishable from true 20/20 vision, meaning the headset’s display can be as clear as the human eye. If the prototype headset ever reaches the mass market, it could be the first consumer VR product to achieve Retina resolution.
Analysis: What achieves retinal resolution?
A proper retina resolution hasn’t been achieved by a consumer VR headset yet, and it’s something we don’t even expect to see Oculus Quest 3. But if Oculus, or any VR company, was able to implement Retina resolution into its headsets, it would be a truly huge leap forward in widely available VR technology.
Whereas VR headset resolution, in general, has been many times higher than earlier efforts such as PSVR (Which maxed out at a soupy 960 x 1080 to accommodate the PS4’s lacking specs), we still haven’t come close to lifetime Retina resolution, and we’re likely at least a few years away.
But what will retinal resolution mean for VR? For one, it will make VR content more widely accessible. A resolution comparable to that of the human eye will significantly reduce motion sickness, as well as the often unstable extraterrestrial feeling that produces low resolution.
The technology could make augmented reality even more impressive, as pointed out by Zuckerberg in the quote above. If there’s a slight change between your own vision and the VR headset, AR content such as interactive objects and effects can blend into your surroundings even more seamlessly.
We’ll be interested to see how the Retina resolution technology pans out for gaming. Surely, there have to be some compromises based on the graphical fidelity of a VR game? As such, we’re not entirely sure the technology will be able to sustain AAA-quality VR titles, at least not through the first half of this decade, even some Best VR Games Need such a powerful headset right now valve index To enjoy to the fullest.
Still, Retina resolution technology certainly advances the imagination, if nothing else. We’ve all marveled at science fiction-level VR technology in movies and shows before, so it’s a bit absurd to think that we could actually move closer to immersive VR, where the difference between your own vision and the device’s resolution The difference is negligible. at best.
